“I wanted this to be a dramatic eye catcher, regardless of the contents inside,” says Normandy Designer Kathryn O’Donovan. “Finding balance in opposition, whether it’s the pairing of black and white, or modern and traditional styling, allowed me to create a display piece that’s just as striking on its own, as the contents held within it.”

Designed in collaboration with a local metal fabricator, this display case celebrates craftsmanship. The black metal frame, large glass panels and clean lines of the doors lean very modern. Maple shelves for the interior add warmth and contrast, each one illuminated with integrated shelf lighting to spotlight whatever is placed within. An angled shelf puts added emphasis on certain display pieces, giving you a better view of treasured collectables, wine bottles or your favorite art books.

But even within the modern styling of the case, traditional nods can be found in the arch top shape and the mullion pattern on the doors. The display case itself is inset into the wall, which is adorned with applied molding, elaborate crown, and architectural details that are undeniably traditional in style.

“It’s the marriage of these two opposing design styles that make this display piece feel so dynamic,” notes Kathryn. “The black metal frame grounds the more traditional detailing, creating a look that feels classic yet fresh. While the moldings and the arched doors are more traditional and soften the design.”

Placed in a foyer, hallway, dining room, or den, this feature wall becomes a focal point — one that feels intentional, elegant, and filled with possibilities.

White kitchens will always have their place, but more and more we’re seeing the emergence of color in the kitchen, and not just as an accent or afterthought. The backsplash centers the design with a striking layer. A patterned ceramic tile with a metallic glaze reflects light subtly across its geometric, slightly three-dimensional surface. “Laundry isn’t my favorite chore, so I wanted to make this space feel fun,” Normandy Designer Becca Ruggiero says. “People love the idea of color but don’t always know where to start, and smaller spaces like a laundry room are ideal for that first step.”

Wrapped in a rich green cabinet color and featuring a playful porcelain-tile floor pattern, the room has a bold personality while still leaning traditional, proof that color can fit into most any aesthetic. The classic cabinet door styles and white subway tile keep the backdrop clean and simple, allowing the green to take center stage.

The gray quartz sink with the durable white quartz countertop adds contrast and a subtle layer of visual interest, as well as a practical workspace for handwashing or tackling tough stains. Polished chrome hardware ties seamlessly to the washer and dryer finish.

But functionality is where this room truly shines. Every detail is designed around real-life laundry habits, from folding to hanging to sorting. “I’m always thinking through how you actually use a laundry room,” Becca says. “You need space for folding, places to hang things, and smart storage that makes the process easier.”

Double hamper pull-outs keep laundry sorted and out of sight, rollouts and a lazy Susan maximize cabinet interiors, and a pull-out paper towel holder is tucked neatly into a drawer for quick cleanup. For delicate items, a discreet pull-out drying rack helps prevent shrinking favorite shirts. “It’s a very approachable and functional design,” Becca notes. “From the cabinets to the countertops, it’s simple, but layered with accessories that really elevate how the space works.”

Applied molding on the side wall reinforces the traditional feel, giving the room a finished, furniture-like quality. “This fireplace leans minimalist with simple textured fluting and a soft color, but the metal banding creates a moment of pause and elegance,” Normandy Designer Abby Osborn says. “This design was all about balance, with subtle color and texture meeting strong geometry.”

Above, a burnished brass light fixture descends like sleek jewelry, echoing the metallic tones of the banding and antique brass wall sconces. The layered lighting strategy enhances the fireplace as both a functional heat source and a dramatic focal point.

The 55-inch remote-controlled electric fireplace itself delivers clean-lined ambiance without the need for venting, making it an ideal solution for modern interiors. “We wanted the flame to feel like a living art piece,” Abby notes. “Electric allowed us the freedom to focus purely on form, proportion, and atmosphere.”

Flanked by plush lounge seating with tailored brass arms, and grounded by a sculptural round coffee table, the fireplace becomes the natural heart of the room. Every detail of the intimate gathering space, from the tailored brass arms of the chairs to the soft glow reflected in the tile’s vertical grooves, reinforces the intentional simplicity of the design.

“This space proves that linear design doesn’t have to feel cold, when layered with the right tones and materials,” Abby says. “This space is moody and modern and complements the nearby beverage center with its lighter aesthetic. It’s a modern sanctuary defined by rhythm and refined craftsmanship.”

“Earth tones remain a constant in home design, and their organic character makes them the perfect backdrop for any current or upcoming trend,” notes Normandy Designer Ashley Noethe. “This spectrum of shades has shifted and evolved with time, moving beyond simple neutrals to blend with any color scheme or design aesthetic.  

The shift in undertones of today’s earth-inspired palettes is what makes them feel current. “In the ’90s and early 2000s, we saw more peachy and warm undertones,” Ashley says. “Now, the look has cooled down a bit. We’re seeing gray and blue undertones, even though these are still warm colors overall.”  

This subtle change allows you to blend new design choices with existing finishes, which is helpful for those who still have elements from the gray-dominant design era of the past decade. 

“Because gray was so popular for so long, people are trying to blend with what they have,” Ashley says. “That’s where I like to use what I call ‘chameleon colors.’ You can pair them with oranges, tans, or grays, and they still work beautifully. It makes the space more flexible and gives you the freedom to bring in new pieces of art, wallpaper, or décor without clashing.” 

This adaptability makes earth tones an ideal choice for long-lasting design. Major investments like cabinetry, flooring, and countertops benefit most from these balanced hues, ensuring the space feels current for years to come.  

“Cabinetry is a significant expense,” Ashley says. “You don’t want to select something that looks dated in a few years. With earth tones, you can easily rotate other colors and features in and out as trends evolve.” 

A neutral, earth-toned foundation gives people the freedom to experiment. “If the permanent elements are neutral, you can have fun with the details,” she says. “You can swap out accessories, bring in seasonal décor, or follow new color trends without needing a full remodel.” 

Recalling the more rigid palettes of decades past, Ashley says, “In the early aughts the big trend was super red cherry wood and black granite. There was only so much you could do with that. Now, we’re creating spaces that can grow and change with you.”

“Bringing in deeper, darker tones doesn’t mean the space has to feel dark,” Normandy Designer Ashley Noethe says. “Moody design is all about atmosphere. The key is pairing those bold colors with good lighting, so the room still feels functional and warm.”

Lighting is essential when working with darker shades, according to Ashley. From accent fixtures that highlight textured tile to layered lighting that adds dimension, light ensures a moody room doesn’t cross into gloomy territory. “Accent lighting that complements wood grain or tile texture helps bring depth to the space,” Ashley notes. “It’s about playing with scale and finishes so the room feels intentional and balanced.”

Ashley often combines shades like black, charcoal, chocolate, and deep green to achieve that moody feel without losing contrast. “When you pair darker tones with something lighter, like white cabinetry, it helps each element stand out more,” she says. “If you want a bold, textured backsplash and dark hood as the focal point, consider adding lighter cabinets around the perimeter. The contrast draws your eye to the dark elements rather than letting everything blend together.”

Another trend Ashley highlights is color washing or color drenching, where walls, trim, and cabinetry are all painted in the same tone for a cocoon-like effect. “Color washing creates such a cozy, immersive atmosphere for any style,” she says. “It’s perfect for bedrooms, dens, or anywhere you want to relax.”

Bathrooms and powder rooms are ideal spots to experiment with moody design. “A powder room is the perfect place to go bold because you generally don’t spend as much time in there as you would a primary bathroom,” Ashley notes. “And since it’s a smaller space, it’s easy to change later if you want to try something different or add lighter elements like painted trim.”

Whether through deep hues, layered textures, or thoughtful contrast, moody design is about creating emotion and depth. “It’s dramatic, but it’s still livable,” Ashley says. “When done right, it feels warm, elegant, and a little bit mysterious all at the same time.”

“People are seeking homes that feel restorative, and natural palettes help create that atmosphere, allowing interiors to flow more easily from indoors to outdoors,” Bryan says. “Embracing colors and materials rooted in the natural world, particularly soothing greens, calming blues, and warm stained woods is a trend that’s more than a passing style. While there’s been a shift from bold shades to softer blues and greens, pairing these painted colors with woods is still very popular.”

Painted cabinetry has dominated for years, versus stained wood kitchens for instance, but wood grains have continued to provide a nice balance in any space, according to Bryan. “Whether it’s rift cut white oak, maple or walnut, natural wood brings life into a design, even if it’s a white or off-white space,” he says. “Small touches of stained woods bring a sense of craftsmanship and complement painted cabinetry for a layered, custom look.”

There are a variety of ways to bring in earthy wood elements. “I’ve always been a big fan of bringing in natural wood whenever possible, even if it’s interior shelves or beams. Bringing any natural stained wood into the space adds depth so the design isn’t monochrome,” Bryan says. “And we often work with projects that are keeping the original wood flooring, so bringing in another wood element helps bring the focus up.”

In terms of color, greens have become especially popular, ranging from soft sage tones to deeper, moodier shades, and mirror the tranquility of leafy and lush landscapes. Blues echo the expansiveness of the sea or the peace of a clear horizon. Whether used on kitchen cabinets or in accents like tile, these hues offer versatility that pairs beautifully with both modern and traditional aesthetics.

Paired with wood elements, these colors can stay in style for years to come. “A white kitchen with navy island might be considered trendy, but a navy island with some stained cabinets will feel more timeless,” notes Bryan. This more neutral and classic canvas can also pair effortlessly with trending metallics like brushed brass or matte black, as well as with a wide variety of stone and tile.

“Greens, blues, and natural woods never truly go out of style,” Bryan says. “They evolve subtly with the times, but their roots in nature ensure they remain relevant and desirable year after year.”
