“For this hall bath design, we really wanted to show how much storage you can get in a smaller footprint,” Normandy Designer Jackie Jensen says. “These types of spaces are usually tight, so every inch has to work hard.”

That thinking led to a larger vanity with generous drawer storage, a recessed medicine cabinet with a built-in electrical outlet, a nook with open shelving and additional cabinet storage, as well as two shower niches — one lower and one higher — for easy accessibility to products whether you’re showering or bathing.

“These details elevate everyday function without visual clutter,” Jackie says. “It’s practical but still feels very streamlined with a modest sophistication.”

The subtle but stylish design details provide both personality and durability. The tapered cabinet foot at the base of the vanity gives the piece a furniture-like presence rather than a heavy cabinetry look. The vanity and storage niches are topped with an easy-to-maintain quartz surface selected also for its clean appearance. The hexagon porcelain floor tile adds interest while standing up to the demands of everyday life.

Finished in a soft gray, the cabinetry keeps the room feeling airy, and brushed nickel hardware brings a luxe element. Underfoot, a marble herringbone floor provides a crisp counterpoint to the saturated green. “I like to say that the floor design points you towards the beautiful wall element,” Ashley says. The directional pattern of the tile indeed draws the eye toward the porcelain feature wall, reinforcing it as the visual anchor while breaking up the expanses of green with light and movement.

“For this powder room, we wanted to do something bold and fun but with a subtle sophistication. The finished product makes a strong impression but still has a soft beauty,” Ashley says. “When you commit fully to a standout material, it becomes the guiding light for the entire design.”

“It’s a simple palette with various patterns and shapes that weave together a perfectly traditional space,” Normandy Designer Laura Barber says. “The restrained color story allows the marble to shine, and the interplay of mosaics, bevels, and stone patterns creates depth without overwhelming the small footprint.”

At the center of the design is a console sink with a striking black marble top. The floor features a black-and-white marble mosaic edged with a marble baseboard that adds to the sophisticated tone. The sink wall is clad in white marble tile and features an integrated mirror with beveled edge. “The marble mirror frame is modest in size in order to match the small space,” Laura says. “The beveled accents are a subtle defining feature that gives the design a beautifully tailored finish.” Simple wallpaper adds another layer of light texture.

Polished nickel hardware provides the final layer of refinement. It offers a sleek counterpoint as the finish on the faucet with classic cross handles, all the way to the exposed plumbing. “The console’s polished nickel legs, with subtle hexagonal features, inspired the selection of the coordinating light fixtures,” Laura explains. “Polished nickel adds that tailored shine and works beautifully with marble’s natural softness.”

While marble is a delicate material that requires mindful care, Laura notes, “Surface damage from certain personal care products is less likely in a powder room which experiences less daily wear than a full bath.” For this reason, a powder room is an ideal space to go big with high-end materials like marble, that require more attention.

“This powder room is a perfectly balanced expression of traditional design,” Laura says. “It’s an understated approach to luxury that is still rich with interest and depth.”

According to Normandy Designer Becca Ruggiero, bathtub niches are stepping in as both a practical and stylish solution. “Niches aren’t just for showers anymore, they’re incredibly useful around a freestanding bathtub,” Becca explains. “Instead of balancing your bath products on the edge of the tub, or on a tub tray, you can integrate storage directly into the wall for a more integrated look.”

Becca notes that many homeowners are moving away from bulky tub surrounds and decks to create a more open, flowing feel. “Whether you’re a dedicated bath-taker or just an occasional soaker, people are choosing thinner-profile tubs for that minimal aesthetic,” she says. “The only downside is where do you put all your bath salts or glass of wine? That’s where a niche or shelf can make all the difference.”

In some cases, Becca and team get creative with the layout to make space for these features. “When you remove a large tub deck in front of a window, it opens up the opportunity to build out the wall slightly,” she explains. “We’ll sometimes add just a few inches to create a ledge or niche for bath items, or even to highlight a unique tile or wall-mounted faucet.”

These niches don’t always have to hold toiletries, either. “In one project, we added a half wall beside the bathtub that doubles as a spot for a TV and a glass of wine,” Becca shares. “It’s about designing the space around how you actually relax.”

For another bathroom, Becca designed a double-sided niche, one serving the freestanding bathtub and another on the opposite side for the shower. “You just have to be mindful about staggering their heights,” she explains. “Because they share a wall, you can’t place them in the same spot, but you can make them visually connect.”

Whether it’s matching the shower niche or introducing a contrasting tile for texture and depth, Becca emphasizes that tub niches blend function with artistry. “I’ll often work with people who love two different tiles,” she adds. “We’ll use one for the shower and one for the tub niche — they don’t have to match perfectly, but they should complement each other for a cohesive, relaxing retreat.”

“White is clean and crisp, it goes with everything, and if you want to bring in a pop of color or change it down the road — or get the house ready to sell — you don’t have to worry about polarizing buyers who don’t love lime green tile,” Normandy Designer Ashley Noethe says.

While white bathrooms are always on trend, and the look suits any size bathroom, Ashley observes that many white bathrooms tend to be on the smaller end of the spectrum. That’s likely because — besides the flexibility and resale benefits — a white bathroom can make a smaller bathroom feel bigger.

“Painting a smaller bathroom white makes it feel less cramped, especially since not a lot of bathrooms have windows,” Ashley says. “It gives the space a little room to breathe. Adding mirrors can also give a smaller bathroom more depth and help reflect light to brighten the area.”

White can also be a good choice for a bathroom since it symbolizes an emphasis on cleanliness, which is one of the main purposes of a bathroom — in part because it’s easy to know when a white bathroom needs to be cleaned. This is certainly something to consider in terms of your household and preferences.

With a white bathroom, you can accessorize however you want and change the look on a whim. “A white bathroom will never go out of style, even as trends come and go, white is constant,” Ashley says. “You can easily change the paint color or fixtures and suddenly it’s a whole new bathroom, so it’s a safe investment choice.”

Recessed Medicine Cabinet Pros and Cons

Pros: “Recessed medicine cabinets allow you to take advantage of an unused joist pocket behind the wall for extra storage space,” Becca says. Custom designs allow you to create unique storage for your household, such as hidden charging outlets for everything from your phone to toothbrushes. “Other features available now include automatic lighting when you open the door, and other integrated options like make-up mirrors,” Becca says. “Medicine cabinets are not always known for their aesthetic qualities, but new designs are able to give you the elegance of a beautiful mirror and a seamless way to disguise the mess.”

Cons: “These medicine cabinet designs can be costlier in general, especially if this space behind the wall doesn’t already exist. Sometimes gaining that space can require rearranging HVAC or plumbing, or even building a secondary wall,” according to Becca. Recessed cabinets also aren’t a good fit on an exterior wall, because they generally won’t allow for enough insulation. “Be careful when selecting your medicine cabinet option, as some newer models are not able to be fully recessed into the wall, so be sure to do your research,” Becca adds.

Wall-Mounted Medicine Cabinet Pros and Cons

Pros: If the place where you want to install your medicine cabinet is on an exterior wall, or if there are mechanicals behind the drywall, a wall-mounted medicine cabinet is a better option for your space. “Mounted medicine cabinets are also a good option if you are opting for a design element like a pocket door, which will require that pocket in between the wall for its mechanism,” Becca says. This type of medicine cabinet is also generally lower in price, so it can be kinder to your budget.

Cons: “Most wall-mounted medicine cabinets have a fixed design, and can stick out quite a bit into the bathroom space,” Becca says. You want to be mindful when selecting on of these to make sure the depth is not to obtrusive to you sink and lighting space. But Becca points out that Kohler and certain specialty home decor stores have some beautiful, wall-mounted medicine cabinet designs now available.

“Your typical shower-tub combos tend to be on the smaller side, and don’t have many bells and whistles. But just because it’s a hall bath doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve the primary bath treatment,” Normandy Designer Ashley Noethe says. “This home’s current primary bathroom doesn’t have a bathtub, but every now and then they wanted to indulge in a good soak.”

When Ashley sat down with the St. Charles, IL family to find ways to enhance their bathroom, they didn’t have to look far for a little extra space. They determined that the neighboring hall closet didn’t need to be as deep as it was. By decreasing the closet depth slightly, they could find enough space for a large bathtub without dramatically compromising their usable storage.

“Sometimes there’s space you can shrink without much sacrifice, and in return you gain a lot of benefits, like this great bathing experience,” Ashley says.

In addition to the increased length and depth for the bathtub — a new 6-foot-long, deep soaker-height model — the upgraded shower-tub combo boasts a bathtub with sloped ergonomic design with a place to rest your arms. The back wall has a long ledge that provides ample storage for their daughters’ shower and bath products. A shower column with a hand shower attachment is a helpful tool for washing hair while taking a bath.

“We also selected a curved curtain rod, which gives more elbow space when showering. Creating a half wall along the back, instead of a niche, gave an extra three to four inches on each side, making the shower feel larger,” Ashley says. “Extra touches like the rain shower head creates the feel of a primary bathroom, making the showering experience feel as luxurious as a soak in the tub.”

Beyond the bathtub and shower upgrades, the rest of the bathroom enjoyed a refresh, while maintaining classic appeal. The timeless white color palette of the bathroom stayed the same, but upgraded tile alongside fixtures in beautiful, brushed bronze add depth to the design. The double vanity and freestanding cabinet ensure that both guests and the family have all the storage space they need. “The hall bathroom is now a next-level experience that every family member or long-term visitor can enjoy,” Ashley says.
