“I wanted this to be a dramatic eye catcher, regardless of the contents inside,” says Normandy Designer Kathryn O’Donovan. “Finding balance in opposition, whether it’s the pairing of black and white, or modern and traditional styling, allowed me to create a display piece that’s just as striking on its own, as the contents held within it.”

Designed in collaboration with a local metal fabricator, this display case celebrates craftsmanship. The black metal frame, large glass panels and clean lines of the doors lean very modern. Maple shelves for the interior add warmth and contrast, each one illuminated with integrated shelf lighting to spotlight whatever is placed within. An angled shelf puts added emphasis on certain display pieces, giving you a better view of treasured collectables, wine bottles or your favorite art books.

But even within the modern styling of the case, traditional nods can be found in the arch top shape and the mullion pattern on the doors. The display case itself is inset into the wall, which is adorned with applied molding, elaborate crown, and architectural details that are undeniably traditional in style.

“It’s the marriage of these two opposing design styles that make this display piece feel so dynamic,” notes Kathryn. “The black metal frame grounds the more traditional detailing, creating a look that feels classic yet fresh. While the moldings and the arched doors are more traditional and soften the design.”

Placed in a foyer, hallway, dining room, or den, this feature wall becomes a focal point — one that feels intentional, elegant, and filled with possibilities.

Perhaps what’s most striking about this year’s kitchen design trends, is that they don’t resemble anything trendy at all. Timeless Color
White kitchens will always have their place, but more and more we’re seeing the emergence of color in the kitchen, and not just as an accent or afterthought. Most of the colors have a tie to natural hues, think lots of greens, blues and warm tones, and they tend to be less bold than we’ve seen in years past. These kitchens are all-in on color, but they’re doing color with subtlety and sophistication.

Mixing Styles
The challenge of merging different design styles used to stem from couples attempting to balance two opposing design perspectives. “The entry frames your view of the kitchen, echoing elements such as the blackened steel hood, the gunmetal cabinet hardware, and the metal trim that surrounds each zone of cabinets,” Normandy Designer Kathryn O’Donovan says. “Metal is used not as an accent in this kitchen, but as a defining design language.”

Linear brass detailing on the custom blackened steel hood carries through to the sculptural rope LED lighting above the island and the wall sconces, as well as the gold-toned frames on the glass-front doors. The integrated bar area with open shelving is seamlessly bookended by a concealed column refrigerator and freezer, giving the wall a refined presence.

“This design detail elevates the entertaining zone into a statement feature while maintaining a streamlined look,” Kathryn says. “Integrated lighting paired with glass shelving allows light to pass through and illuminate the interior space, and the bronze glass gives it a sexy vibe.”

While the kitchen reads as elevated and polished, it was designed to support everyday living and hosting. “It has a very high-end aesthetic, but it’s also built with materials to endure real life and regular entertaining,” Kathryn says. The waterfall island, backsplash, and countertops are crafted from manmade quartz that mimics the look of marble, without the fragility of natural stone. Textured melamine cabinetry adds a luminous, wood-like finish while offering exceptional durability.

“With this style of engineered finish on the cabinet fronts you have better control over visual consistency, rather than being at the mercy of the natural variations inherent to a wood grain,” Kathryn explains. “This approach fits perfectly within a clean-lined design. The linear grain elongates the cabinet height and provides a sense of structure which complements the natural vein movement of the marble inspired quartz and therefore the overall geometry of the space.”

The suite of integrated appliances — from the steam oven and coffee machine to the induction cooktop — along with custom storage throughout makes this kitchen one to be enjoyed as much as it is admired. “That combination of durable, high-performance elements and sophisticated style transforms this kitchen into the ultimate modern hosting destination,” Kathryn says.

Above the teal vanity, an elegant hanging mirror reflects the room’s most glistening feature: the subway tile backsplash. “The iridescent tile really drew me in and offers so many opportunities to pull color into a space,” Kathryn says. “With its shifting blues, greens, and metallic undertones, the tile brings movement and color that catches the light beautifully, giving the room energy and dimension.”

The teal cabinet’s vertical reeded texture also adds depth and movement. Kathryn chose to customize the door so the area behind the French gold hardware lays flat rather than fluted, adding textural contrast. Custom legs complete the furniture-like feel, elevating the vanity from functional storage to statement piece.

The matte black countertop, black under-mount sink, hanging mirror and the deep black walls provide a compelling contrast to the bold tile. “Those darker elements help give the room its dramatic edge,” Kathryn says. “They make the tile feel even more dynamic and layered.”

“Sometimes people are torn between blue or green, and the color we used in this kitchen really hits the mark for both,” Normandy Designer Jackie Jensen says. “Vertical wood slats at the sink wall and island are a rift cut white oak wood species that brings out beautiful color variations in stains — some wood slats are warmer and some pull more gray which pairs beautifully with the rainforest finish. Each wall incorporates some element of wood, ensuring the rich paint color never feels overpowering.”

The custom drywall hood, with a subtle wood trim, anchors the range wall, and provides unique shelving on either end. The hood is finished to blend seamlessly into the surrounding walls rather than competing for attention.

“Many homeowners are prioritizing concealed appliances, and a drywall hood is a great way to do that — it lets other design details shine,” Jackie says. Paneled appliances, such as the refrigerator, blend with surrounding cabinetry and reinforce this aesthetic, allowing the cabinetry color to take the spotlight while creating a fluid geometric presence.

Above the spacious composite low-divide sink, matte-black metal shelves replace upper cabinets and offer more bold shapes, creating layered contrast in front of the oak slat paneling. Without a window above the sink, this combination adds visual interest while keeping the space light and open. Quartz countertops and full-height backsplash with soft veining further balance the space with a calm, neutral surface.

This confident use of color is paired with mixed styles throughout the design that keep the space current. Classic shaker cabinetry in the kitchen is mixed with sleek slab-front doors at the bar — a modern take on inset cabinets, which typically leans more traditional — creating visual interest without overwhelming the space.

The bar also offers a moment to introduce shine, with a glass tile backsplash that distinguishes the area from the main kitchen, while still tying into the overall palette. A beverage refrigerator and concealed bar pullout keep bottles tucked away when not entertaining.

“For this hall bath design, we really wanted to show how much storage you can get in a smaller footprint,” Normandy Designer Jackie Jensen says. “These types of spaces are usually tight, so every inch has to work hard.”

That thinking led to a larger vanity with generous drawer storage, a recessed medicine cabinet with a built-in electrical outlet, a nook with open shelving and additional cabinet storage, as well as two shower niches — one lower and one higher — for easy accessibility to products whether you’re showering or bathing.

“These details elevate everyday function without visual clutter,” Jackie says. “It’s practical but still feels very streamlined with a modest sophistication.”

The subtle but stylish design details provide both personality and durability. The tapered cabinet foot at the base of the vanity gives the piece a furniture-like presence rather than a heavy cabinetry look. The vanity and storage niches are topped with an easy-to-maintain quartz surface selected also for its clean appearance. The hexagon porcelain floor tile adds interest while standing up to the demands of everyday life.

Finished in a soft gray, the cabinetry keeps the room feeling airy, and brushed nickel hardware brings a luxe element. In the tub-shower combination, a gray-blue tile introduces subtle color, and a tile arrangement shift on the back wall adds visual depth. “It’s simple, but changing the tile design on one wall gives it something unique and appealing to the eye,” Jackie says. A shower column combines a showerhead and handheld, offering versatility in a cost-effective way.

Layered lighting throughout — including integrated mirror lights, vanity lights, recessed can lights, a fan light, and dedicated shower lighting — allows the room to shift effortlessly from bright and functional to soft and calming. “You can really choose the mood depending on the time of day,” Jackie says.

In this multipurpose destination, one side functions as a walk-in pantry with generous open shelving for everyday storage and display, while the opposite side reads like a potting or gardening station, an idea rooted in classic country estates. “I was imagining a space where someone like Martha Stewart would cut flowers or pot plants,” Ashley says. “That idea really drove the material and color choices, the patterns, and the feeling of the room.”

The custom cabinetry is painted in a soft, earthy mushroom tone with a brushed glaze and features vintage-style cutouts, furniture-like proportions, and tall baseboards that ground the space. Lattice mesh produce drawers — vented at both the front and bottom — bring in a distinctly garden-inspired detail, ideal for storing fruits and vegetables while adding beautiful texture. The cloudy textured chinchilla glass adds another organic layer.

“We wanted this to feel meticulously collected,” Ashley explains. “These are details that make the pantry feel special, like your home’s unique conservatory-inspired space. The natural light that streams in really highlights these earth-inspired textures and tones.”

An earthy-toned quartzite plays a starring role as well, wrapping the countertops, backsplash and backsplash shelf, and even the sculptural sink, all cut from the same slab for a seamless look. Above, a stepped tray ceiling draws the eye upward, creating an airy, almost atrium-like feeling that echoes the organic movement of the stone. The marble-inspired checkered flooring adds to the classic garden estate feel. The decorative sconces channel elegant roots, while the antique nickel cross handles at the sink embody an outdoor faucet.

Soft pink walls — pulled directly from the quartzite veining and complementing the delicate floral wallpaper — add color without overpowering the space. “Pink can feel unexpected,” Ashley notes, “but here it ties everything together and brings out the softness in the stone and patterns.” This pink tone is also found in the adjoining kitchen, tying the two spaces together visually.

Inside the cabinets are bottle holders, tip-outs for laundry or pet food, and thoughtful storage solutions tailored to daily life. A custom cherry pocket dog door with antique brass hardware connects to a dedicated dog bowl area. “I’m always thinking about how people actually live in their homes,” Ashley says. “Where pets eat, sleep, and move throughout the day — that matters just as much as how the room looks.”

The result is a butler’s pantry that feels equal parts practical and poetic: a traditional garden retreat designed to be used and admired every day.

“This design echoes a Mediterranean travel moment,” Normandy Designer Ashley Noethe says. “When you’re there, everything is stone — volcanic rock, mountains —aged, worn, and full of history.” The introduction of mixed metals adds a refined industrial note, gently modernizing the space without disrupting its earthy, organic character.

At the core of the design is a floating vanity and vessel sink designed to reinforce the room’s stone-forward narrative. That sensibility shows up in the textured wallpaper, which softens the walls with subtle variation, and in the porcelain floor tile designed to mimic terracotta. Paired with a sleek wall-mounted toilet, the combination keeps the room visually light while also supporting accessible design principles.

A wall-mounted faucet in a luxe steel finish adds a crisp, architectural counterpoint. “I wanted everything to feel really clean and simple,” Ashley says. “The lines are sleek, and the texture does all the talking.”

An irregularly shaped mirror in blackened brass brings an unexpected softness, while burnished steel pendant lights add a stylistic and visual contrast. “They give the bathroom a current feeling by giving it a slight industrial edge,” Ashley says. “You can see movement in the metal, which adds more depth to the design.”

Organic elements further warm the space. A custom olivewood ledge, perfect for natural décor, introduces a tone that contrasts gently with the surrounding neutrals. “The wood element was key,” Ashley notes. “Not only does it break up the stone feel, but it adds that Mediterranean warmth.”

The confident use of color continues with an aspen green pedestal sink, a traditional silhouette combined with an unexpected hue. “The shape of the sink is fairly classic, but we wanted to mix styles and go bolder with color,” Ashley says. “The green toilet complements the sink while reinforcing the playful, revivalist spirit that’s currently reemerging in home design.”

Hardware finishes include titanium, which is a deep, moody tone that’s darker than chrome but softer than black, and black nickel which both add subtle contrast without distraction.

Underfoot, a marble herringbone floor provides a crisp counterpoint to the saturated green. “I like to say that the floor design points you towards the beautiful wall element,” Ashley says. The directional pattern of the tile indeed draws the eye toward the porcelain feature wall, reinforcing it as the visual anchor while breaking up the expanses of green with light and movement.

“For this powder room, we wanted to do something bold and fun but with a subtle sophistication. The finished product makes a strong impression but still has a soft beauty,” Ashley says. “When you commit fully to a standout material, it becomes the guiding light for the entire design.”
